#2 MN-2.jpg (79789 bytes) 2. Land of 10,000 Lakes

Concept Description:

While Minnesota is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” in fact, there are 11,842 lakes that are 10 acres or more in size. Depending on one's definition of a lake, there could be 15,000 lakes in Minnesota.

Minnesota’s lakes and waterways were used by Minnesota’s native peoples for thousands of years. Today, most Minnesotans can relate to “going to the lake,” whether to fish, swim, boat or just to sit by the shore and enjoy the scenery. Although Northern Minnesota is known worldwide for its lakes and their tremendous recreational opportunities, Southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities Metropolitan area, also has many lakes that provide boating, fishing and other forms of outdoor recreation including a beautiful place for a walk.

Minnesota is home to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) which was established by Congress in 1978. It has more than 1,500 miles of canoe routes, nearly 2,200 designated campsites, and more than 1,000 lakes and streams waiting within its one million acre boundary, the BWCAW draws thousands of visitors each year from around the world.

Design Description:

·        The shore of a lake with a forest of pine trees on the horizon is in the background.

·        Centered on the quarter and overlaying the lakeshore of trees would be the outline of the State of Minnesota.

·        Add fisherman landing a fish

The river has been important to native peoples and provided the power to operate flour and lumber mills that made Minnesota the economic center of the upper Midwest. The river is home to the American Bald Eagle, and also offers fishing, boating and travel.
